Based on his report on his citizenship application, we checked back on the Ellis Island site for the Caledonia, and we were able to find Grandfather Michael. They had spelled his name "Bresland," making it just different enough that it did not show up when you did a search for Michael Breslin. Michael is recorded on the Ellis Island site as arriving May 23, 1909 at the Port of NY on the SS Caledonia sailing from Londonderry. His nearest relative in Ireland is his father, "William Bresland, Frosses, Ireland." Michael is joining his aunt, "Mrs Cavanaugh, 31 Ash St., Saratoga Springs, NY." For nearest relative and address, the manifest listed "William Bresland, Frosses, Ireland."
1911: Certificate of Arrival - Naturalization records show that Michael Breslin requested a Certificate of Arrival on 22 May 1911; he stated he was 22 years old, Occupation: Motorman; Color: White; Complexion Fair, Height 5 feet, 11 inches, Weight 155 pounds, Color of hair: Brown, Color of eyes Blue, Distinctive marks: None. He declared he was born in County Donegal, Ireland on 21Nov1888. His residence in 1911 was 1641 Pacific Street, Brooklyn, New York. [NB: James P. Duffy & family - Michael's future brother-in-law and family lived at 1641 Pacific St. at the time of the 1910 Census, but Michael was not listed there in 1910]. He reported he had filed citizenship papers, was born in Donegal Ireland, worked as a Motorman for the BRT Bergen St., had a wife and 2 boys; he was of medium height and had blue eyes and dark hair.
1918: He was naturalized on 17 May 1918. His wife's name was Agnes, 29 years old and born in Brooklyn, New York. Their residence was 229 Troy Ave, Brooklyn, NY. They had two children, Edward, age 3, born 27 Aug 1914, and William, age 2, born 21 Aug 1915. Michael was able to speak English and write his own name. Witnesses were Michael Agustuses Green, a conductor, residing at 234 Schanectady Ave, Brooklyn and Patrick Thornton, Motorman, residing at 747 Franklin Ave., Brooklyn, New York.
